Day 10

Day ten has arrived!

Today, Denise said that boredom is a sign of unutilized potential. She suggested thinking of something I would be willing and want to devote a half hour or hour a day to – something just for me. She suggested ancestry.com, reading, a craft, tai chi, a blog, and so on. Luckily, I started this blog ten days ago and already like to read. I think my life is full enough as it is! I’m actually looking forward to finishing this blog and going back to my book, “The Abstinence Teacher.” I think I read it before, but I can’t remember where the story goes!

For breakfast, Denise said to have half a bagel with one tablespoon of low-fat cream cheese, and 1/2 cup berries. Done. For a snack, she said to have a piece of string cheese, plus 1/2 cup berries or other sliced fruit. Done. In the evening she said to do a crossword to stretch my brain; I will pull myself out of my book and do a crossword puzzle for fifteen minutes before going to sleep. I like the New York Times crossword puzzles, although even the Monday ones are not easy for me!

Day 9

Welcome to day nine! Today again was busy with the school year starting. I think it has been good to get back into the swing of things. Today Denise said to experience the power of wonder, and to remember what it was like to view the world through the eyes of a four-year-old. It’s true that after spending decades on earth, and giving a name to everything we see, we tend to lose our sense of wonder at things around us! Today when I went for a walk, I tried to notice things around me more. I noticed a kitten, maybe six months old, bouncing around, excited about everything. I noticed two little girls waving at me, they were practicing saying “hi” over and over. I noticed the green grass thanks to recent rain, and was thankful that it will still be light out after school for a few more months.

Today, Denise said to have oat meal with flax seed and blueberries for breakfast, which I did. She said to spend the morning looking at the world through a four-year-olds eyes… that was difficult because I was at school for a professional development day, but I tried to look through a four-year-olds eyes during my walk after school!

For the afternoon she said to have an egg on toast for a snack (I included this with my dinner), and she said that if I could, to spend my lunch hour in a library and to pick up a non-fiction book about something I would like to learn more about. Funny! I work in a school library. Tomorrow I will take home a book on evolution.

She says to go to be early tonight and get up early to watch the sun come up, to keep my sense of wonder going. Sorry, I am not doing this!! I do not like getting up before seven, and I will be grouchy all day if I get up early on the weekends. Maybe I could find somewhere to watch the sun set tomorrow? Might be some good views over the lake near by.

Day 8

Greetings! This blog post also needs to be short as I have run over my internet time; on the plus side, I am about finished with my “where have I been, what have I been doing since age 18” project. Yay!

Today, Denise talked about finding serenity and peace every day. She recommended reciting the serenity prayer, or finding another Mantra. Perhaps I should rethink “In the End, it doesn’t even matter.” It’s a bit on the depressive side? I’ll think of another, but it needs to resonate with me.

Today Denise said to have cheese toast for breakfast, along with an apple. She said if I felt anxious to count to ten slowly while stretching. This does work! She said to have a snack of a half cup of yogurt and a banana, which I did, after school.

She said to turn to nature for serenity this evening; I went for a walk along the track again. I’ll keep doing this til it gets too cold out!

Day 7

This will be a quick blog post because a new school year starts tomorrow where I work, and I spent several hours just now working on my project that involves listing addresses/workplaces since age 18. Here is a brief report from today!

Today, Denise talked about using all the tools in my “energy kit” to stay positive. I think I did a pretty good job today. My favorite “tool” so far that she has given is definitely to quit trying to control what others think of me or wonder what they are thinking about me. It brings negative energy and it is exhausting!

Today, Denise said to have a low-fat waffle for breakfast, with a mixture of cottage cheese, vanilla, and cinnamon on top, along with some blueberries. (I added some maple syrup.) I thought it might be gross but it was actually good! For the afternoon she said to make sure I was drinking enough water and to eat either a half of an avocado with a 20170820_101222corn tortilla, or some more blueberries; I ate more blueberries. They are good and they have a longer shelf life than some other berries like strawberries, I’ve noticed.

For the evening she said to jam out on my i-pod; I haven’t done that yet but I will when I’m done with this blog.

All in all, a good day, feeling relaxed and ready for the school year to begin. I think I’m ready to just get going with it all ready!

TODAY’S PERSONAL ENERGY REPORT

When you Wake Up: Morning Energy Questions
◊ What will I look forward to today?
Walking on the running track near by with an audio book.
◊ What pleasure will I add to my day?
Waffles in the morning!
◊ How will I connect to someone today?
If we spot our new neighbors moving in, offer them pizza.

During the Day: Energy Checklist
◊ I got enough sleep last night. Yes, although I had trouble falling asleep.
◊ I energized with my morning stretch (detailed in book). Done
◊ I ate breakfast. Done. Yummy!
◊ I drank eight glasses of water. I think I have about 14 ounces to go. I think this will be easier once school starts and I just always have it on my desk.
◊ I got outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Yes, while I was walking around the running track.
◊ I did my afternoon Energy Shot stretch (detailed in book). I will do this while listening to some music as prescribed by Denise.
◊ If I caught myself slouching or slumping, I corrected my posture. Remembered as I typed this. Will try and remember at school tomorrow.
◊ If I caught myself in a negative thought, I turned it positive. Yes for the most part.
◊ I connected with someone. The neighbors did indeed move in, and we did serve them pizza. And loaned them our spare bed (brought it to their house).
◊ I did something fun or relaxing, just for me. I will read before bed.
◊ I worked out for thirty minutes or more. Hmm, probably twenty minutes on the track and also cleaned around the house? Today this is a stretch.
◊ I only went on the internet from six to eight PM: Was working on a project but didn’t mindlessly surf the net too much today.
◊ I did my bedtime stretch (detailed in book.) To be done this evening about ten p.m.

Before Bed: Evening Energy Questions
◊ Did I live the promises of my Morning Energy Questions?
 Yes
◊ What fired me up today, and why?
Well, I did get started on the “where have I been since age 18” project, which, when you were traveling about two years of that time, and living in five different states, and did temp work sometimes and had real jobs sometimes… it’s challenging.
◊ What tired me out today, and why?
I just couldn’t sleep last night, so I woke up tired. But still, it was nice waking up to a clean room with my clothes laid out.

Day Six

For day six, Denise discusses the need to let go of stress. She tells a story that a lecturer at a stress management workshop told; he asked the audience how much a glass of water weighs? And then he responded to his own question, that it doesn’t matter how much it weighs, it matters how long you carry it. It would be easy to carry for an hour, but if you had to carry it for a whole day, by the next day you would be calling an ambulance. Denise says that this is the same with stress. We have to learn to put our worries aside, and pick them up again later. This really resonated with me.

Denise said to think about what I need help with today, and to ask somebody else – my mother, my partner, etc. for that help. I asked my hubby to get the groceries while I went and checked the PO box, so we could get home quicker! For breakfast she said to have an English muffin with peanut butter and a bowl of fruit; I had the hotel breakfast to pick from, but did manage to eat a bagel with peanut butter and a container of applesauce. Probably more empty carbs and high fructose corn syrup than she would have like, but oh well!

For the afternoon, she said to blow off stress with a quick walk; I did three laps around our running track near by. She said to have a piece of string cheese along with a cup of chopped veggies and two tablespoons of hummus as a snack. I’m not sure if I had a full cup of snap peas, but pretty close.

For an after work/evening boost she recommended destressing with yoga. I have one of Yoga Body Burnher Yoga DVDs so I did most of the “Yoga body burn” session.

Today was better; my mantra has switched to that I can’t control other people’s ideas of me and that negative thought patterns are similar to calorie counting and just need to be ignored. These are some life-long habits I have that go in waves, but right now I appear to be on the upswing!

During the Day: Energy Checklist
◊ I got enough sleep last night. Yes. Not as good as sleeping in my bed at home though.
◊ I energized with my morning stretch (detailed in book). Done
◊ I ate breakfast. Done, per Denise’s instructions (mostly).
◊ I drank eight glasses of water. I have ten more ounces to go!
◊ I got outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Yes, while I was walking around the running track.
◊ I did my afternoon Energy Shot stretch (detailed in book). Whoops! I will do it when I’m done typing this blog.
◊ If I caught myself slouching or slumping, I corrected my posture. Remembered as I typed this, and also a few other times!
◊ If I caught myself in a negative thought, I turned it positive. Mostly I just shut them down. Sometimes I try to just shut them down instead of ruminating long enough to switch them to a positive. But maybe they would be banished longer if I found the positive.
◊ I connected with someone. Hmm. I only talked to my hubby today. But I connected with him!
◊ I did something fun or relaxing, just for me. I will read before bed.
◊ I worked out for thirty minutes or more. Yes, between the walking and the yoga.
◊ I only went on the internet from six to eight PM: Failed miserably. But not as miserably as yesterday.
◊ I did my bedtime stretch (detailed in book.) To be done this evening about ten p.m.

Before Bed: Evening Energy Questions
◊ Did I live the promises of my Morning Energy Questions?
 Yes
◊ What fired me up today, and why?
Thinking about my new morning routine, and finding an audio book for when I go walking.
◊ What tired me out today, and why?
I wasn’t too tired today, but I do have a project looming, that involves writing down all of my past addresses since I was eighteen, along with past work places, and every time I left the country, that seems like a big headache, because I moved a lot in my late teens and twenties, including travel overseas for ten months at a time two different times so… yeah, I’ve been putting that off.

Day 5

Welcome to Day 5! Today, Denise recommended making over my morning routine for more energy. She said that her morning routine includes the following: her morning stretch, brushing her teeth and making her bed, “padding to the kitchen” for a glass of water with a squeeze of fresh lemon, eating breakfast and savoring family time along with her one cup of coffee. Then she heads to her home gym for her thirty-minute “energize” session. She then instructs me to make my own morning routine that might include a fragrant coffee or tea, daily meditation, and maybe a whimsical alarm clock.

I thought about this a lot, and, I think the most important thing for my routine is making it as simple as possible to get up and get going. Otherwise I tend to laze around thinking about the little things that must be done before I leave the house. So my morning routine will actually start the night before! I will make sure my space by our bed is clean and tidy so that is the first thing I see in the morning, I will lay my clothes out, make sure coffee supplies are set out and the french press is clean and ready to go. My purse and anything I need for the school day will be set in my bin by the front door. Also, I plan to take Denise up on the “whimsical alarm clock” idea so I don’t have to keep my phone by my bed as an alarm clock.

In the morning, all I will need to do is wake up, finish the water by my bed, do my morning stretches, hop into my clothes, savor my coffee over breakfast, spend fifteen minutes on hair/makeup/teeth brushing, and I will be out the door! I need to be at school by 8 AM and it is not even a five minute walk. So if I have done my prep the night before, I should be able to get up at 7 AM and not be rushed.

Alright, moving on. Today was a better day. I’m going to add in an internet category to my Daily Energy Checklist, which I didn’t follow today, but at least it will get me moving in a reasonable direction. Today was better partially because my husband and I got out of the house and are staying in a hotel for the night in a bigger town an hour from us.

It’s also a better day because I really tried to remember a few things from yesterday; for example that trying to anticipate or control how other people think of me is exhausting. Also, the idea I had yesterday, that the part of my brain that used to count calories all the time without me actually wanting it to, is very similar to the neural pathways that keep my hyper-focused on work and people at work, even when I don’t want it to. It’s the same beast in a different form. And only nominally based in reality.

So anyway. Today Denise said to plan my morning ritual, and then eat an energizing breakfast of half an english muffin with one egg, a slice of cheese, and a slice of turkey bacon. Also three quarters cup of blueberries. I had a full english muffin, two slices of turkey bacon, and forgot about the blueberries. Whoops! I did have some with the snack she recommends later, though.

For the afternoon, she says to pick up any supplies I need for my morning routine (I’m going to look for the whimsical alarm clock tomorrow), and says to eat a half cup of cottage cheese with blueberries for a snack. I do this. For the evening, she says to spend a few minutes visualizing how I will wake up tomorrow with my new morning ritual. I’m at a hotel tonight so I will start my new routine Saturday. I’ll have to figure out something to do on the weekends to do to get me up and out; maybe a walk on the track after breakfast.

TODAY’S PERSONAL ENERGY REPORT

When you Wake Up: Morning Energy Questions
◊ What will I look forward to today?
Bowling with my hubby!
◊ What pleasure will I add to my day?
Swimming in the hotel pool
◊ How will I connect to someone today?
I forgot to fill this out in the morning, but we connected with the woman that served us 20170818_180644our food at a Thai restaurant today, almost every time we come to this town we eat at the same restaurant. And now they have a grocery attached too!

During the Day: Energy Checklist
◊ I got enough sleep last night. Yes
◊ I energized with my morning stretch (detailed in book). Done
◊ I ate breakfast. Done, per Denise’s instructions (mostly).
◊ I drank eight glasses of water. I’m not sure if I had quite enough, but I had at least six glasses including tea with dinner. I’m drinking some right now, and don’t want to drink more or I’ll be up all night. Also, dinner was a soupy curry so there was a lot of water in that.
◊ I got outside for some fresh air and sunshine. We had our Thai dinner outside in the sun.
◊ I did my afternoon Energy Shot stretch (detailed in book). I will do it with my evening stretch!
◊ If I caught myself slouching or slumping, I corrected my posture. Remembered as I typed this!
◊ If I caught myself in a negative thought, I turned it positive. Mostly I told myself to just stop it, but I’ll work to flip it to positive.
◊ I connected with someone. The Thai lady! And a lady sitting next to us who was speaking Spanish.
◊ I did something fun or relaxing, just for me. I went swimming.
◊ I worked out for thirty minutes or more. I swam! I swam for a whole thirty minutes back and forth in the hotel pool. I was quite proud of myself because I didn’t know I could do that. I didn’t go fast, but I was crawling along or swimming the butterfly, or front stroke, or side stroke, etc, the whole time. I’m checking into swimming lessons in this town on Saturdays at the YMCA in September; again it is an hour away but might be worth it. I’d love to be confident enough to swim laps in a pool for exercise.
◊ I only went on the internet from six to eight PM: Failed miserably.
◊ I did my bedtime stretch (detailed in book.) To be done this evening about ten p.m.

Before Bed: Evening Energy Questions
◊ Did I live the promises of my Morning Energy Questions?
 Yes
◊ What fired me up today, and why?
Getting out to a larger town, and learning that I could swim for thirty minutes without stopping!
◊ What tired me out today, and why?
That fuzzy cloud wasn’t directly over my head, but it was maybe a few feet above my head and a little behind. It was lurking!

Day 4

On day four, Denise discuses tips for, if you are having a bad day, turning it into a good one. For example, calming down, having a cup of tea, and vowing to start over. Other tips include repeating the serenity prayer, or a mantra. I think my mantra is, “In the End, it doesn’t even matter.” (And yes, I sing that line in my head.) I know that doesn’t sound very upbeat, but to me it is comforting sometimes to think about the fact that we’re all going to die and that the earth will get eaten by the sun, and these small little negative thoughts I have that get stuck in my brain are really rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Today was okay… I did text my friend from my previous job like I said I would yesterday. I finished my owl from yesterday… see picture here! I did practice some breaking of 20170816_222850negative thought patterns by saying “no!” out loud when I was stuck on one. On the downside, I did spend too much time on the internet, and I still had the fuzzy cloud hanging over my head. I did a little reading of Denise’s chapter on negative thinking, and one thing that resonated with me, was to stop trying to anticipate what other people are thinking, and to try and control every situation, especially in regards to work. She says it’s exhausting, and she’s right. She also recommended in that chapter to do a “Positive Thinking” night cap. Each night, right down 1) At any point today, did I choose to take the positive view? 2) At any point today did I slip into negative thinking? 3) What shall I look forward to tomorrow? I think that this exercise might really help me. Additionally, sometimes I think I get so stuck in negative thought patterns that I forget what else to think about! Perhaps I should make a list titled “other more interesting things to think about” and look at it when I find myself stuck!!

Alright moving on. Today, Denise reminded me to go with the flow today. She told me to have a bagel with ricotta cheese plus jam and cinnamon on it, plus an apple for breakfast. I had cream cheese instead of ricotta and a banana instead of the apple, but I believe the spirit was the same!

She said, during the chaos of my day, to return to my Mantra, and to have a protein bar as a snack. I repeated “In the End, it doesn’t Even Matter!” as I was driving to a nearby town to go to the library again, and, I did have that protein bar. After work she said to denise austin dancingsweat out a bad day on my cardio machine, or to do the workout routine in her book, which I forgot was a suggestion for the day, but I did sweat out to her dancing workout video pictured here.

She said if I need an extra pick-me-up, which I do, to watch a favorite comedy this evening. I rented Edwards Scissorhands from the library, which somehow my husband has not seen, so we are going to watch that tonight. I seem to be backsliding instead of moving forward in some ways. I doubt this is what Denise anticipated; probably not, and probably it is my unique quirks. Also, my worst habits, like internet surfing, don’t show up on the Personal Energy Report, but are listed as an energy drain in her book. I think need to list a “stuck to only going online between six and eight PM” as part of my own addition to the Personal Energy Report. Gotta keep myself honest somehow!

TODAY’S PERSONAL ENERGY REPORT

When you Wake Up: Morning Energy Questions
◊ What will I look forward to today?
More books from the library, including “The Abstinence Teacher” by Tom Perrotta.
◊ What pleasure will I add to my day? Reading
◊ How will I connect to someone today? Message a woman I used to work with about books I need to get back to her and meeting for lunch sometime when next I am in her town.

During the Day: Energy Checklist
◊ I got enough sleep last night. Yes
◊ I energized with my morning stretch (detailed in book). Done
◊ I ate breakfast. Done, per Denise’s instructions (mostly).
◊ I drank eight glasses of water. I  have fourteen more to go. Hope I don’t have to pee a lot tonight! Also, I’m breaking my no screens before bed rule to watch Edward Scissorhands. Tbd if my sleep is affected, ha ha.
◊ I got outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Yes, the sun was back out today and I walked along the main street of a nearby town.
◊ I did my afternoon Energy Shot stretch (detailed in book). Done.
◊ If I caught myself slouching or slumping, I corrected my posture. Only remembered when I typed this. Again!
◊ If I caught myself in a negative thought, I turned it positive. Again, I’m definitely more aware of how often I’m in negative thought cycles, but in some ways I think this is stressing me out even more. In some ways it is exactly the same as when I used to obsessively keep a running tally of the calories I ate in a day, even though I didn’t really want to be doing it.
◊ I connected with someone. I chatted with a different lady that was working at the library today.
◊ I did something fun or relaxing, just for me. I started The Abstinence Teacher.
◊ I worked out for thirty minutes or more. Yes, one of Denise’s “Dance Party” workout videos
◊ I did my bedtime stretch (detailed in book.) To be done this evening about ten p.m.

Before Bed: Evening Energy Questions
◊ Did I live the promises of my Morning Energy Questions?
 Yes
◊ What fired me up today, and why?
Getting out to the small town near by was good for me.
◊ What tired me out today, and why?
Ruminating again, also, I surfed the net a lot of the morning and didn’t get out of the house until after lunch. It has become abundantly clear that my two main enemies of having much more positive energy and being more healthy are my net surfing habits and my negative thoughts habits (especially around things I can’t control, like other people’s perceptions of me, or wanting to get a project done but not having a clear idea of how to do it).

Onward!
